Howdy and Hello Urban Mama’s Community!
My name is Cole Jon Roy Doig and I’m writing this posting to introduce myself to the Urban Mama’s community and offer up my services as a part time childcare provider here in the Portland area. I have worked with hundreds of children all throughout Portland ever since I moved here four and a half years ago to finish my undergraduate degree. During my last few quarters at school I volunteered as a teacher for the A.K.A. Science program at Sabin Elementary School in N.E. Portland and also helped with their homework-help club whenever needed. At this time I also began working at ChildRoots Center for Young Children. Throughout the years there, I have worked as a classroom aide, chef, primary care provider, all-around handy man and really just about every other role imaginable at a childcare facility! By working at both their main-center and also the satellite schools they have opened in the last two years, I’ve gained extensive experience with a wide age-range and learned the techniques and language necessary to provide developmentally appropriate care to infants, toddlers and preschool kiddos. I have a particular knack for working with toddler aged children. The amount of language development and awe that goes with being a wobler is pretty fun to witness and engage. I’ve also been lucky enough to share my previous experience studying Puppetry at The Evergreen State College where I completed my B.A. and acquired all the prerequisite credits necessary to gain a teaching certification in elementary education. ChildRoots hosts several seasonal community events throughout the year and at the last few Winter-fares I’ve had the pleasure of writing/performing several highly praised and unconventional puppet shows for the children and families at the center. Many families from the center have in fact contacted me asking for me to prepare puppet shows for birthday parties and other events.
After my first year volunteering at Sabin Elementary, I was given the exciting opportunity to teach music (one of my main passions and areas of interest) with my longtime friend and fellow educator David Weinberg, as part of the SUN program. We have now taught these classes for almost 4 years and are responsible for the creation and implementation of our own music education curriculum that has a minimal emphasis on music theory and primary focus on learning through play and exploration. There are two focused classes, one for K-2 grade students named Imagimusic and another for 3-6 grade students called Space Jam. We have guests from local and touring bands come into our class to share their insights and experiences (as well their musical equipment!) with the children and have even had the music we play with the children played on the radio! In short, we try to set up guaranteed success scenarios to empower the children and nurture their ability to express themselves creatively. For example, we might remove all the keys that would produce discord on an instrument or color code them so that the children have the experience of playing something that actually sounds harmonious and good to their ears. We do this in order to plant the seed in their minds that they are totally capable musicians and that playing music is actually really fun rather than dampening their enthusiasm by pounding scales into their heads. This week we taught the kiddos about cymatics, which is the science of visualizing sound waves. Next week, we’ll make our own instruments and then amplify them, which is always one of the children’s favorite activities!
While I have enjoyed my time at ChildRoots, the time has come for me to become a free agent in order to stabilize my working schedule. Currently my music classes fall on Wednesdays and will continue for the next month and a half. After that date I will be given my choice of weekdays to teach my music classes. This will allow me to adjust my music programs schedule in order to coordinate with your families’ needs. I have a reliable vehicle and would be willing to commute anywhere within Multomah county within reason. I’d happily commit to a 20-25 hour position based on my current availability. I'm also always interested in occasional fill in/babysitting gigs as well. I have many childcare references and credentials that I am happy to provide them upon inquiry. Feel free to contact me via email at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you may have.
Thanks for reading and I eagerly await getting to know your family!
